Is anyone else watching Downton Abbey? Anyone? I just finished the third episode and OH MY GAWD. (BTW, you want to find the original British version because apparently PBS really did a hatchet job when they aired it.)

If you've ever thought, "Hmm, I love a great Edwardian period drama, set in a beautiful old English manor, but what would really put this over the top is a character who looks a bit like Simon Tam AND IS GAY," then this is the show for you!!!

Of course, this is the first new show I've really felt fannish about in ages, and I can find only glimmerings of fanac anywhere and practically no slash. Life is so cruel!

I watched it and liked it a lot! It's not the kind of thing I tend to feel fannish about, but it's a lovely show. I bet that it'll produce a few Yuletide fics this year, though.

Ooooooooooh, I hope you're right!! And I hope that if they do, there's a lot of Thomas in them. Lots and lots. *g*

Hi! Good to hear from you! Yes, I like Downton Abbey a lot--better than the new Upstairs Downstairs in fact. I wrote a crossover with Lord Peter Wimsey, and I'm tempted to have an older LPW turn up at 165 Eaton Place to detect another murder.

I know, I haven't posted in AGES. Sad, really!

You wrote a Downton Abbey/LPW crossover? Did I understand that correctly, or was it a UD/LPW crossover?

I have a major plot bunny gnawing at my brain (it has to do with Thomas, of course), but I'm so out of practice writing for British fandoms although I did write Fry/Laurie for a while...

But at this point I might even settle for some Anna/Mr. Bates because I honestly adore them. Which kind of says how much I love this show in general because I! do not read het!

Downton Abbey/LPW! It's on A03 and is called "Maiden Overs."

Anna/Mr. Bates is a bit too Brief Encounter stiff-upper-lip for me (it's like they're only one generation short of "Remains of the Day.") My favorite is Gwen, although I hope that Matthew has a few good times before his inevitable death in WWI.

I will go read it! Awesome!

I should confess that FIRST I fell for Mr. Bates and that made me eager to see a love interest for him, so I was mostly just happy at first that Anna fit the bill. But it's grown on me. I think I end up having a soft spot for their relationship because Mr. Bates is the type of older man I've crushed on IRL, so I sympathize with poor Anna!

Um, yeeaaahhh...I think this just MIGHT be the show for me! *g*

Seriously, you and a ton of other people I know in fandom have recced this to me. Clearly, I have to put it on The List (of shows to catch up on that everyone else already loves).

I think you would love this! I feel like some of the bonds and friendships are very Psych-like, just in terms of how people form these really tight alliances with one another and you see people make choices that are informed by the friendships they build and the responsibilities they feel they have to one another as a result.

And... THOMAS. I was gobsmacked by how absolutely amazingly gorgeous he is and then when his character turned out to be gay... love love love!

I'm glad to hear this is getting rec'd, because I've been quite stunned that there is not a bigger fandom for it. I just don't get it! This show is awesome!

I watched it on PBS earlier this year and really liked it! I don't think they really hatcheted it as much as was claimed, since they took out the commercials that had aired.

Isn't it wonderful?! Oh, I think I'm seriously in love with this show. I watched the last four episodes today and was in total heaven. Now I'm going to watch the series over again, I'm really excited about that!

I haven't seen the PBS version myself, so that's good to know the editing wasn't as bad as I'd heard!
